Abstract

Objective: To identify the factors that influence the interruption of breastfeeding in children with mothers who are aeronauts before the first year of age.

Method: Quantitative cross-sectional study. The survey was conducted through an online questionnaire. It was asked questions about breastfeeding, such as: breastfeeding period, guidance received, duration of exclusive breastfeeding, etc., and questions related to the return of the aeronaut to work after the end of maternity leave.

Results: The final sample consisted of 31 aeronaut mothers, whose prenatal care and delivery were carried out in the private health system, and in which all intended to breastfeed. The practice of exclusive breastfeeding was reported by 51.6% of mothers, however when correlated with food introduction, it was observed that only 12 (75%) actually practiced, and 38.7% of them breastfed beyond the first year of life after returning to work. The extension of maternity leave was used by 93.5% of the mothers, 87.1% claimed to use the "Breastfeeding Schedule" after returning to work and 71% lived in the same city as the contractual base.

Conclusions: It was believed that the flight schedule was the main factor in early weaning, but observing the data found, it was found that most mothers used the “Breastfeeding Schedule” and reported that it was useful for breastfeeding. However, it is observed that there are other difficulties, such as pain, fissure, etc., that favor early weaning and that occurred during the period of maternity leave. In conclusion, educating the mother and the support network before and after childbirth, and providing support, can increase the chances of exclusive breastfeeding.
