Abstract

The study aimed to identify the complementary feeding practices of children from six months to two years old assisted in Primary Health Care. A cross-sectional study was carried out with 51 children with the application of a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Food Consumption Markers Form of the Food and Nutrition Surveillance System to those responsible. A prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding for four months or more than 64.7% was identified, a high prevalence of consumption of fruits (74.5%), vegetables (72.5%), meat or eggs (80.4%), beans (84.3%), sweetened drinks (72.5%), instant noodles, packaged snacks or crackers (54.9%) and stuffed cookies, sweets or treats (58.8%). It was found that unpaid maternal occupation was associated with a lower supply of ultra-processed foods on the day prior to the survey (PR = 0.62; CI95%: 0.46-0.84; p = 0.003) and there was a borderline association between lower supply of sugary products the previous day with maternal age less than 20 years (PR = 0.74; CI95%: 0.54-1.00, p = 0.05). The study showed a high prevalence of unhealthy complementary feeding practices, signaling the need for policies and actions that encourage breastfeeding and promote adequate and healthy complementary feeding.
