Effects of vitamin D supplementation in adults with HIV – literature review

Abstract

Objective: The objective of this work was to review in the scientific literature the effects of vitamin D supplementation on PLHIV, in order to collaborate with the improvement of the clinical practice of health professionals. Methods: We carried out a survey of scientific publications in the Electronic Health Library electronic database, searched through the descriptors "HIV”, “supplementation”, “vitamin D”, presented in the English and Portuguese languages, correlated from 2007 to 2019, to elucidate the effects of vitamin D supplementation on young adults and adults with HIV. Results: After applying the exclusion criteria and reading the titles and abstracts, eight clinical trials were included in this review. The protocols described daily, weekly or monthly doses equivalent to 600 IU to 7,000 IU/day. In addition to the effect on serum vitamin concentration, the studies evaluated clinical outcomes of disease progression (viral load and lymphocyte count), bone health and cardiovascular health outcomes, discussed according to these categories. Conclusion: Studies indicated that vitamin D supplementation was safe and effective in adults with HIV, providing positive effects in maintaining serum vitamin D levels and deficiency resolution. Vitamin D supplementation did not improve clinical parameters of the disease (viral load and lymphocyte count) nor anthropometric measures. Positive results regarding bone health and cardiovascular health were observed, but they need to be further studied due to the interfering factors in these outcomes.
