Efeito da batata yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolia) sobre os parâmetros glicêmicos de idosos institucionalizados

Abstract

The yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolia) is being empirically used to help in the reduction of insulin resistance as well as in diabetes mellitus. The number of diabetic people is increasing due to population aging, the increase of urbanization and prevalence of obesity and also sedentarism. This study had as goal evaluate the effects of yacon over glycemic parameters of elderlies of an institutional asylum in the city of Itajaí/Santa Catarina, after 5 weeks of intervention with yacon in natura added to their fruit juice. It was used 24g of yacon, equivalent to 7,7g of fructooligosaccharide, distributed once a day to each participant, being 12 of the Group I (diabetics and insulin resistant) and 11 of Group II (without insulin resistance or Diabetics Mellitus). To determinate the glycemic control, we performed laboratory tests for glycated hemoglobin, fructosamine, fasting glycemia and insulin before and after each intervention. The result of glycated hemoglobin was significantly lower in both groups, fructosamine presented a significant increase just in Group II, while the concentration of fasting glycemia and insulin remained similar in both moments of the study. The anthropometric measures did not suffer any alteration from both groups. Concludes that yacon decreases the concentration of glycated hemoglobin in the blood, however this result was conflicting to the values of fructosamine and fasting glycemia.
