Abstract

Objective: Evaluate the relationship between the risk of refeeding syndrome and clinical outcomes (length of stay and death) in patients admitted on emergency room of two public hospitals in the Federal District. Methods: This is a longitudinal, prospective, observational and analytical study, which was performed in two public hospitals of the Federal District in the period of august 2018 to august 2019. Results: The sample consisted of 478 patients admitted on the emergency room of the two hospitals. It was observed that 45,60% of the sample showed nutritional risk and 32,22% some degree of malnutrition. The frequency of risk for refeeding syndrome was 23,65%. Patients at risk for refeeding syndrome were 83% more risk to stay in hospital for more than 7 days and 58% more risk to die than patients who were not at risk of refeeding syndrome. Conclusion: Patients who are at risk for refeeding syndrome remained longer hospitalized and are more likely to die.
