Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of constipation and to verify the knowledge about dietary fiber and related lifestyle habits in patients with constipation and without constipation according to the Rome III criterion. Methodology: Crosssectional and descriptive study. Socioeconomic and clinical data were collected and a questionnaire about food consumption, lifestyle and knowledge about the prevention and treatment of intestinal constipation was applied. Intestinal constipation was defined according to the consensus of ROMA III. Results were compared by Chi-square test, adjusted by Bonferroni correction, adopting a significance level of 5%. Results: The prevalence of self-reported constipation was 30% and 33% according to the ROMA III criterion. The use of home resources for constipation was mentioned by 55.3% of constipated and 29.2% of nonconstipated ones. Non-constipated individuals had greater knowledge about food sources of lactobacillus. Regarding water consumption, 13.2% of constipated and 31.8% of non-constipated drink more than eight glasses a day (p = 0.02). As for medicines and dietary resources to help with constipation, constipated consist of group that consumed them most (p <0.05). Conclusion: Differences were observed between habits and food knowledge between constipated and non-constipated. Assessing the prevalence of intestinal constipation and associated factors is critical to assist in its treatment and prevention.
